Anorexia-Bulimia

This is an excellent and most inspiring book on eating disorders to date, in particular anorexia and bulimia.

The author’s daughter initially suffered from anorexia and developed into bulimia. She developed a state of the art home treatment program based on the ancient Romans, who were notorious for their gluttony in feasts and their subsequent purging. Her unique individual program worked remarkably well for her daughter.

The problem with most anorexics and bulimics is that they tend to relapse and suffer again even after repeated programs and hospitalizations.

In her book, the author explained how her treatment plan helped her daughter control her eating behavior, instead of depending on group therapy, which sometimes may induce sufferers to prolong their disorders. In particular, she demonstrated how her strategies could control eating disorders with nobody watching - an important factor in relapses.

In addition, the author showed how coping with stress and loneliness holds the key to controlling eating disorders.

Anorexia-Bulimia is a step-by-step individual home treatment program comprises two separate programs, one for adults and the other for teens.

These programs involve no drugs, no medications, no clinics, and no hospital stays.

It is a myth that only doctors and therapists can help people with eating disorders. The truth is that YOU are the best person to rescue your child from eating disorders. Anorexia-Bulimia is specially written for you - the parent!
Food Cravings
and
Addictive Foods

by

Stephen Lau

Foods are not your enemies: they nourish you; they give you pleasure.

But food cravings are something else. Addictive foods are like drugs: they affect your brain to keep you hooked.

Foods are healthy for you only if you understand food desires and food cravings, and do the following:

·  Eat certain foods to block food cravings and snacking.

·  Choose foods to steady your blood sugar level.

·  Regulate your appetite-controlling hormone (leptin) to control your eating habit.

·  Break any food addiction cycle.

·  Eliminate social factors contributing to binge eating.

·  Motivate your self-control and self-discipline over food cravings.

Food addiction

How do you become addicted to foods?

Your brain has a pleasure center that serves the functions of making you eat, and making you want sex in order to reproduce - the two primal functions of human existence.

A pleasurable experience makes your brain produce dopamine, a brain chemical responsible for producing pleasure. Cheese, chocolate, cookies, and French fries, among others, contain compulsive substances that cause a habituation, which may affect different people with different degree of intensity.

Given that the pleasure center in your brain is responsible for pleasure from food as well as pleasure from sex, if one does not have the libido (sexual attraction), one is more inclined to look for pleasure from food. Hence, for those who are bored, lonely, overstressed, and unloved, food becomes more than a source of nutrition - an unstoppable food addiction.

Stimulating the brain's opiate receptors can make you high or feeling good. This is how an individual may become addicted to sex as much as to food.

However, what goes up must also come down. The brain learns to adjust itself in order to anticipate such stimulation to continue - in this way, the brain comes to rely on addictive substances to make these euphoric feelings disappear. Then, if you break the addiction, you would feel bad, making you want to reach out for yet another addictive substance to make you feel better again. This is how food addiction or any addiction cycle is formed!

Sugar addiction

Many people are addicted to carbohydrates. However, they are actually addicted to the sugar in carbohydrates. Surprisingly, people are not addicted to carbohydrate-rich foods such as green vegetables, fruits, and brains.

Sugar initiates the release of natural opiates in the brain. These opiates, which are tiny molecular structures, activate the dopamine in the brain, giving you the pleasure.

Research at Johns Hopkins University showed that babies given dribs of sugary water stop crying immediately as opposed to those given only pure water because sugary water is much sweeter than mother's milk, and thus creating the setting for the release of natural opiates in the brain.

Understanding the phenomenon of food addiction, food manufacturers have ingeniously introduced both fat and sugar to their products to accentuate the effect of these opiates, thereby instrumental in creating the addiction in the food. This is validated when an opiate blocker (such as naloxone) is introduced, the craving immediately ceases.

Carbohydrates themselves are not fattening. They have become the culprit due to the media. Eating carbohydrate-rich foods in moderation does not make you fat.

Eating a baked potato (150 calories) or a slice of bread (70 calories) cannot make you pile on. It is the extras, such as butter (100 calories), the sour cream (25 calories) and the bacon bits (25 calories), which are the real culprits in weight gain.

Sugar is concentrated calories, and it makes you fat!

If you eat carbohydrate-rich foods, you may become filled up before you can get any further. For example, if you eat rice (300 calories), you eat less of everything else. Even if you overeat, your calories may become stored as glycogen for energy and power, or lost as body heat through exercise.

However, if you consume more calories than you expend, you gain weight. This is a fact!

Do not become addicted to sugar!
