Anorexia

Anorexia, an eating disorder, is self-starvation due to the fear of becoming fat. An anorexic suffers from a distorted mental perception of how an individual may or should look. It is a complex mental disorder, which often requires medical intervention.
Symptoms
The following symptoms are quite common among individuals having an eating disorder, but they may or may not be anorexic:
· skipping meals
· cutting food into small pieces or practicing certain eating rituals
· watching food portions and counting calories
· preoccupation with food recipes but with no intention of eating any one of them
· unexplained weight loss or weight fluctuation
· frequent vomiting after meals
· over-focusing on appearance and body shape
· abusing laxatives
· compulsive exercise
· withdrawal from normal social activities.
Profile and personality
Anorexics often have behavioral problems that constitute an unpleasant personality, characterized by distrustfulness, irritability, secretiveness, stubbornness, and often uncooperativeness.
Anorexia affects mostly affluent women in their twenties.
More obvious signs
· cold skin with bluish tinge (due to anemia)
· pain in sitting (because of insufficient padding over the bones)
· development of body hair (known as lanugo) with loss of hair on the head (a result of the body's natural response to lack of insulation provided by body fat).
· extremely low blood pressure
· abnormal slow heartbeat
· indigestion and severe constipation (due to lack of fiber)
· difficulty in swallowing (due to malfunction of gastrointestinal tract)
· abnormal water retention (due to inadequate protein intake)
· hormonal abnormalities (no or irregular menstrual period).
· insomnia
· frequent headaches (due to inadequate oxygen supply to the brain)
The dangers of anorexia
Anorexia is tantamount to a "death wish." It is self-starvation of the cruelest kind.
Anorexia will often deteriorate, if left untreated over time - it could lead to ultimate death. In fact, according to the American Anorexia/Bulimia Association (AABA), approximately one thousand women die of anorexia each year.
· Anorexia could lead to failure of the digestive system such that it becomes no longer capable of handling any amount of food, irrespective of how small the amount is.
· Due to the low potassium in blood, anorexia could result in permanent muscle damage and extremely low blood pressure.
· Because of the depletion of vitamins and minerals, the anorectic may have kidney failure, ultimately leading to death.
· Anorexia could also trigger heart attacks.
Confrontation and intervention
Patients suffering from anorexia will deteriorate, if the disorder is left untreated over time.
Sometimes it is difficult to detect anorexia in an individual who looks only emaciated. For one thing, an anorexic may successfully mask the physical condition through wearing loose-fitting clothes and abusing laxatives or vomiting in private.
It is critical to confront the anorexic so that medical and professional help can be sought. Loved ones and family members should intervene to help the patient.
· Be knowledgeable and arm yourself with facts about anorexia.
· Don’t accuse or criticize; instead be more understanding, acknowledging the patient’s own concern and fear.
· Expect denial, resistance, and even resentment from the anorexic.
· Stand firm and be persistent. Confront the anorexic, if need be.
·Don’t procrastinate: time is of essence in securing a cure.
Seek medical and professional help
One option is to look for an eating disorder therapy program, based on the credentials of the staff, their experience, and the components of the program.
It is a myth that only doctors and therapists can help sufferers with eating disorders. It is also a myth that an anorexic can overcome the disorder with willpower. It is difficult to defeat the little voices in your head that keep telling you to starve yourself against your own will. To conquer these voices, you need to know how to get them out of the subconscious mind.
Quantum Mind Power shows how you can completely eliminate the negative "voices" inside your head that tell your to purge or not to eat. Quantum Mind Power may help you unlock your subconscious mind to overcome eating disorders to reclaim your health. Master your mind power! This is one of the best programs on harnessing your mind power.
It is a fact that most people relapse and suffer again, even after repeated treatment programs and hospital stays.
The reasons are that group therapy, even under the supervision of doctors and therapists, may have the following undesirable effects:
· dependency on being in the group for recovery
· dependency on doctors and therapists (out of fear of relapses at home with nobody watching or supervising).
· getting negativity from other sufferers in the group therapy
· forming bondage with others in the group therapy (psychologically prolonging the disorder out of fear or reluctance to leave the group therapy)
Anorexia-Bulimia
This is an excellent and most inspiring book on eating disorders to date, in particular anorexia and bulimia.
The author’s daughter initially suffered from anorexia, and developed into bulimia. She developed a state-of-the-art home treatment program based on the ancient Romans, who were notorious for their gluttony in feasts and their subsequent purging. Her unique individual program worked remarkably well for her daughter.
The problem with most anorexics and bulimics is that they tend to relapse and suffer again even after repeated programs and hospitalizations.
In her book, the author explained how her treatment plan helped her daughter control her eating behavior, instead of depending on group therapy, which sometimes may induce sufferers to prolong their disorders. In particular, she demonstrated how her strategies could control eating disorders with nobody watching - an important factor in relapses.
In addition, the author showed how coping with stress and loneliness holds the key to controlling eating disorders.
Anorexia-Bulimia is a step-by-step individual home treatment program that comprises two separate programs, one for adults and the other for teens.
These programs involve no drugs, no medications, no clinics, and no hospital stays.
It is a myth that only doctors and therapists can help people with eating disorders. The truth is that YOU are the best person to rescue your child from eating disorders. Anorexia-Bulimia is specially written for you - the parent!
